This is a page to find out more about my project Pearl’s Ode – see below for photos and videos of the work as it develops.
Pearl’s Ode is a multidisciplinary show which combines storytelling, live music and puppetry. It’s the true story of Julia’s teenage years spent befriending a traumatised rescue pony. Shadow puppets and illuminated ghostly wire-frame horses share the stage with a small cluster of instruments (guitar, banjo, cello and a floor tom drum) while the story and songs are embellished with the voices and soundscape of the three performers.

The work was previewed as a development piece at You Are Here festival in Canberra, and since then the script has been developed further as part of The Hive writers’ program at The Street Theatre with dramaturg Peter Matheson, and was also workshopped with Black Hole Theatre (Melbourne) as part of a Canberra outreach program in 2015.
Showreel – moments from the development performance.
Pearl’s Ode had its first development at You Are Here, Canberra in 2013. Featuring Rosanna Stevens on cello, Sebastian White on vocals, Eloise Menzies and Elizabeth Cain as puppeteers/singers.
Blackhole Theatre Development
With the help of the wonderfully supportive Blackhole Theatre, I was able to share a snippet of the newly dramaturg’d script and get some helpful feedback on the puppets I’ve been working on. I also found out my mum is still a famous puppeteer 😉
